Val Hague

Acrylic & Mixed Media

Education: Bachelor in Illustration from The University of Texas

She was born with some drawing implements in her hand.  Val began her love of drawing in her mother’s art book collection or her father’s law books. If there was a clean surface, she was sure to add her artistic marks on it.  If not in a pasture exploring the wilds with her Daisy Double Barrel BB gun or riding her horse, Val spent many hours drawing from her favorite art books or brushing up on her favorite artists, Charles Russell, Wassily Kandinsky, and Pablo Picasso.  Though Val admires many artists and their styles, she loves black line images filled with bright flat colors, and creative textures to shape her subject matter.  She created her style through her love of ranch life, Mexican folk art, and religious icon images. Val’s parents brought her up in the beautiful surroundings of Sanderson, Texas and the Big Bend country. Working mainly with acrylic and mixed media, she paints the things most important to her from her upbringing of ranch life and the abundant West Texas wildlife.

Val Kerr Hague was born and raised in the small town of Fort Stockton, West Texas. She received her BFA in illustration from The University of Texas, Austin, School of Fine Arts in 1985.  After a short stint in commercial art, including assisting in the illustration of a Texas Monthly Press book entitled “Texas Weather” 1984, Val moved to San Angelo and took a job at the San Angelo Standard-Times art and creative services department. She attended ASU to receive her kinesiology and secondary art education during that time. Val spent 23 years teaching art at Central High School. She also assisted in coaching swimming for 30 years with her husband, David. Val currently has been commissioned by a leading public art agency, NOW Art, in Los Angeles, California, to create works for their community mural program.  She has created 2 works for Walmart in Victoria and Fort Worth, Texas. Val has continued participating in local charities, silent auctions, the Stribling Extravaganza, and showing works in Alpine, Mason, Eldorado, and Del Rio, Texas.
